Status as of 29 September 2026 – Systematics to genus level
The following overview initially follows the still widely used morphology-based classification of Eriophyoidea into three families: Phytoptidae, Eriophyidae and Diptilomiopidae. However, more recent molecular studies show that, in particular, the traditional families Eriophyidae and Diptilomiopidae are not monophyletic in all analyses. The page therefore deliberately includes notes on these unresolved questions.

Genus:
Genus status:
Novophytoptus is the only genus in the subfamily Novophytoptinae.
Biology:
The genus lives endoparasitically in subepidermal intercellular spaces or air chambers of herbaceous monocotyledons in the order Poales; known host families include Cyperaceae, Juncaceae, and Poaceae.
Distinctive features:
The mites have a strongly elongated, worm-shaped body and an unusually posteriorly positioned genital region. Several features of the gnathosoma and legs are unusual among the Eriophyoidea.
Systematic note:
The monogeneric subfamily Novophytoptinae is still placed within Phytoptidae in morphology-based classifications. Molecular studies partly support the distinctiveness of the genus, but also question the traditional delimitation of the subfamilies of Phytoptidae as a whole. The exact position of Novophytoptus within Phytoptidae therefore remains subject to phylogenetic investigation. (1)

Genera:
Note: The position of Borassia and Palmiphytoptus within Phytoptidae has not been conclusively resolved in the recent literature; they are therefore provisionally not assigned to a specific subfamily here.
Genera:
Genera:
Systematic note: Loboquintus and Pentasetacus are treated in recent molecular studies as a distinct early-diverging lineage or as Pentasetacidae. The exact position of this lineage within the Eriophyoidea remains the subject of ongoing phylogenomic investigation.

Genera (world overview according to Duarte et al. 2026):
Status 2026: Duarte et al. (2026) provide an updated world overview of Acaricalini with 36 genera and a new identification key. The three genera newly introduced in 2026, Assamacarus, Nasuchusmoraesia, and Roychakrabartia, are included in the genus list. The authors also point out uncertainties in individual morphological characters used to distinguish genera and the need for further revision.
Delimitation: Neocaphylla Huang & Xue, 2025 is a newly described genus that is not treated as a separate Acaricalini genus in the world key of Duarte et al. (2026). It is therefore listed outside the 36-genus Acaricalini list among the Phyllocoptinae whose tribal placement is currently uncertain.
Genera: Adventacarus Ripka, 2011
Current status: Ripka (2011) explicitly established Adventacarini as a new tribe for Adventacarus. In the current NCBI taxonomy, however, Adventacarini is still listed without an assigned genus (“unclassified Adventacarini”), and the higher-level phylogenomics of Zhang et al. (2024) treats Adventacarini as one of the groups whose position requires further investigation. The tribe is therefore treated here as a historically proposed unit that is not currently supported by phylogenetic evidence; Adventacarus is not presented as a molecularly confirmed tribal placement within Phyllocoptinae.

Eriomacrotergum Rodrigues, Navia, Oliveira & Ferragut, 2016 was originally assigned only provisionally to the Tegonotini; this placement is therefore explicitly identified as provisional.
